I’m SARORN, 25 years old. I have 5 siblings in my family (two sisters and two brothers). I’m the fourth child and as well we are the orphan children because my father died under the Pol Pot regime war when I was 4 years old. So it was very difficult for my mother to look after all the children. Then when I was 7 years old, my three oldest siblings went away from us due to the war; it was really very bad for my family because my mother was injured by a gun mortar; she got a part of the bullet inside her head and bottom and till now she cannot function well. We feel sad about this very much, but what can be done?

At that time my youngest sister and I were living very miserably because our father died and after her accident our mother couldn’t recognize us. She found food by herself by getting from the other people and we tried to look after her. My sister and I had to find the food by ourselves. We did not have enough food to eat every day and there was shortage of every thing, especially we had not parent to look after us. Still, it is our good luck that we are still alive today. We were too young then, so I can’t remember all the things now.

Because of other problems and being very poor, I didn’t go to school till I was 11 years old. Then I got a very heavy case of malaria. For many days my youngest sister was crying very much because if I died, she would be in a very, very difficult situation.

At that time, guess what happened? There was no one to come and help me because they were afraid to get malaria. Also, my house was not near the other people, but it was my great luck that there was one monk, he was very kind to support me like by giving medicine, and some food. Then he brought me to stay in the Pagoda for some time; in that time I was 12 yr old. The monks saw how poor was my mother and sister and in how much difficulty we were living, so he called me to live at the Pagoda.

Then what happened? The first time that I arrived and got the food at the Pagoda, the monk gave me the normal food but it is the best food for me. When I was starting to eat, my tears were coming down, because I though that if my mother and sister come to enjoy this good food like this, how happy they will be. When the monk saw my tears fall down like this, he asked me, why I was crying? I told a lie that because the food was too hot. Three days later I decided to tell him about this truth; then he allowed me to give the food to them every day so we were very happy about that (when I remember this, my tears almost fall down). I was very sorry to tell a lie like him, why? Because I can’t tell lies, otherwise I’m start crying like this.

When I was 13 years old, my house was burned by the Khmer Rouge, see the photos here. I decided to become a monk to learn till I was 24 years old in year 2006. During the period of staying as the monk, I was struggling to learn very, very hard because I have a plan to help my mother and my sister. So now I decided to leave from the monk hood because I think according to my education I can find the work to earn the money to achieve my plans.

So now I’m working as a Taxi Tuk Tuk Driver, this is the summary of my story.
